Background

Our customer is a European OEM that builds sludge drying complete systems for municipal wastewater treatment plants in Germany. At the heart of each system is a decanter centrifuge fed with raw municipal sewage, followed by a water reuse loop.

The OEM needed continuous water quality data at two critical points: the centrifuge inlet (incoming municipal wastewater) and the treated reuse water — data that directly drives flocculant dosing, centrifuge performance and discharge compliance with German standards.

Challenge

  • German-grade expectations: measurement had to be accurate and stable enough to support real-time process control, not just indication.
  • Custom measuring ranges: standard off-the-shelf ranges did not match the customer's process windows.
  • Remote visibility without SCADA cost: the OEM wanted to view on-site data from anywhere, without the budget of a full SCADA/PLC integration.
  • OEM branding: instruments had to integrate seamlessly into the customer's own complete-system offering.

Solution

Instrumentation

  • Suspended solids — SMT06 sensor
  • Transparency — SMT07 sensor
  • Color — SMT08 sensor
  • Ammonia nitrogen — SMT14 sensor
  • COD (UV) — SMT16 sensor
  • MET300 multi-parameter transmitter + MET200 transmitter for signal integration

Customization & Connectivity

  • Measuring ranges customized to the customer's process specifications
  • DTU + IoT platform running on a German SIM card — low-cost remote access to on-site data from anywhere in Europe
  • Full OEM service: instruments delivered ready for integration into the customer's sludge drying system

Results

  • 6 months continuous fault-free operation
  • ±3% measurement deviation maintained
  • Real-time flocculation & centrifuge control

The monitoring data gave the customer's process engineers the balance point for sludge flocculation dosing and centrifuge operation, enabling precise real-time process control and helping ensure the treated water consistently meets applicable German standards.

What the Customer Said

"The routine monitoring parameters offer excellent value for money. There are also many interesting products — such as the transparency sensor — and custom requirements can be implemented very quickly."
— Engineering team of the OEM customer, Germany (translated)
